Born in Sweden, Håkan Vramsmo studied singing at Malmö Musikhögskola, Sweelinck Conservatorium and Conservatoire de Metz with Udo Reinemann and with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll’s Liedclass in Karlsruhe. After moving to London he subsequently graduated from Guildhall School of Music & Drama with distinction and immediately going on to sing at the opening night of the BBC Proms.
Håkan has performed extensively on the concert platform, where he is especially appreciated for his intimate musicianship, appearing at major venues throughout Europe including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Stuttgart Liederhalle, Sibeliusacademin and Aldeburgh, in collaboration with Iain Burnside, Julius Drake, Bengt Forsberg, Rudolf Jansen, Graham Johnson, Gary Matthewman, Roger Vignoles, Llyr Williams and Andrew West at the piano. At Festivals such as Les Heures Romantiques, BBC Proms, St Magnus, Nürnberg, Oxford, Schriermonikoog and Wroclav he has appeared with the Hebridies Ensemble, Carducci Quartet, Gabrieli Consort, Sharoun Ensemble (Berliner Philharmonier) and English Chamber Orchestra.
He has performed with such great symphony orchestras as the BBC, Jerusalem, City of Birmingham, Bournemouth, Wroclaw, Barcelona, Zagreb, Gothenburg, and Malmö, conducted by Martyn Brabbins, Paul McCreech, Leonard Slatkin, Sir David Willcocks, Sakari Oramo and Leon Botstein.
He has been privileged to have recorded such a variety of music as the B-minor Mass on Signum, Le Désespoire de Tircis by Desfontaines for Swedish Radio/Television, songs by Finzi, Barber, Schumann and Schubert for the BBC, Elisabeth Maconchy’s opera The Departure for Chandos Records and Private Joe by Panufnic for Polish Radio. His operatic roles have been Aeneas, Amonasro, Belcore, Des Grieux, Don Alfonso, Don Giovanni, Edyrn, Ernesto, Escamillio, Falke, Father, Figaro (Il Barbiere), Germont Père, Il Conte, Le Grand-Prêtre de Dagon, Macbeth, Marcello, Mark, Mizgir, Nihlankhanta, Eugen Onegin, Papageno, Spercher, Sancho Panza, Shaunard, Tarquinius, The Abbott, Valentine
A particular source of pride are his creations of the roles of Axel in Anna Meredith’s Tarantula in Petrol Blue, Carl in Coleridge-Taylor's Thelma and Pascoe in Huw Watkins' In a Locked Room as well as in Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Healer’ recorded by Classicalfm.
Most recently Håkan has performed as Germont Pere with Kentish Opera and as Marchello with Swansea Opera, Diva Opera and Brava Opera as they toured across the British Isles.
Håkan is part of the team at City Literary Institute in London where he teaches song and opera interpretation and is invited as a guest professor at the International Lied Masterclasses at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels.
